The Historic City of Lincoln

Then on the Sunday of the same weekend, we drove to the historic city of Lincoln. The historic part of the city is on a large hill and there are dozens of little cobblestone streets in between all the shops that lead from the shopping areas at the bottom of the hill to Lincoln Castle and Cathedral at the top! First, we explored Lincoln Castle, which became a prison that followed the rare "Separate System", in which prisoners were not allowed to see one another as a punishment for their crime(s). The chapel located within the castle is the only one in the world that was originally designed for the "Separate System". One of the pictures shows me sitting in one of the seats in the chapel. Creepy!! We walked up a few of the towers and got an amazing view of Lincoln Cathedral towering over all of the other buildings in the area- Lincoln Cathedral is the tallest cathedral in Europe at 271 feet!!! Another climb toward the surrounding wall brought us to the castle's "Keep", which was where prisoners were buried after being executed- their gravestones still remain in the small enclosed grassy area- a photo is posted below. At the castle, there is also an exhibition for one of the only 4 remaining original Magna Cartas. We had seen another at Salisbury Cathedral in March and it was really neat to see how different the two were. This exhibit also had a lot more information on the Magna Carta and compared it to other country's documents. After leaving the castle, we went to the pub on the right hand side of the first picture shown below called the "Magna Carta". All they were serving as a meal was Sunday Lunch, but it wasn't nearly at good as Matt's had been the Sunday before! So, we ordered ice cream sundaes!! Then, we walked over to the cathedral and walked around inside a bit, but the inside wasn't unique to other cathedrals I've seen here, so we didn't stay long. Before heading back to Matt's house, we took a walk down the cobblestone streets to reach the river. What a great day of sightseeing!
